SOMALIA: Pro-Islamists still in Puntland jail
    Aug 16, 2006, 11:32

Two men who were arrested by Puntland police on Sunday in Bossaso, a bustling port city in northern Somalia, are still in jail. The men are accused of meddling into political affairs after one of them, Sheikh Ahmed Farah, gave a lecture to a Bossaso audience that delved into political matters by supporting the Mogadishu-based Islamic Courts Council.

Puntland police officials said an investigation was underway to make sure the detained men had no ties to the Islamists movement in southern Somalia. The Puntland leadership, including the president, publicly stated their objections to Islamist advances towards Puntland-controlled areas.

Puntland military forces have been deployed in the outskirts of Galkayo, the capital of Mudug region where Islamists planned to erect an Islamic Court. The Islamists have postponed their trip to Galkayo, while taking over districts in southern Mudug region.

Residents in Puntland cities have been warned against delving into sensitive political affairs, and Puntland authorities have promised to detain anyone suspected of endangering the peace.

Garowe, the Puntland capital, is currently under a night time curfew that begins at 11 p.m.
