Wish it were that simple. Australian design rules allow for an error in speedometers of plus or minus 10% plus 4 kph. Couple this with the fact that ALL speed cameras must be recalibrated every 4 weeks and you have a situation that allows for exploitation of many drivers who are not speeding. Most speed cameras are out at calibration by an average of 3kph with some examples up to 14 kph.

The day a driver receives a retraction of his speeding fine and an apology because of speed camera error will never come, although it should. When a camera is found to be pumping out speeding fines through calibration errors it is simply recalibrated and put back into service. To suggest that all motorists fined for travelling within the equipment error zone have their fines cancelled is treasonous talk and greeted with stern silence. After all, the general motoring public would end up losing confidence, wouldn't they ?
