"...a glance in your mirror shows the grill of a laden B-Double prime mover about a metre behind the rear window of your wagon. Would a sane person ram his brakes on"

Stupid people do, I know heaps of blokes who have had that happen to them and they have punted the poor little car straight across the intersection as they have had no where to go.
Sadly the press will report it as TRUCK runs into car blah blah blah...

I have always maintained that rear view mirrors should be made an option on motor vehicles, just like indicators, as so few people actually use them!

Dash cams are great but you need them facing forward and to the rear...lol

The issue these days too is unmanned cameras just flashing away day and night. Of course they will often be positioned on downhill runs or open roads with no intersections just waiting for the bloke that is driving a few k's over because it is perfectly safe to do so.

Most people will suck it up and pay a fine as it is too time consuming to go to Court and fight the charge.
The state Governments who are the recipients of the millions of dollars stolen every year do their level best to ensure any publicity that gets out conveys the message that to fight is useless, you will have to pay up.

Speed in my opinion is not a killer...inattention and stupidity are the killer... Stupidity is driving at 80kmh in a suburban street, or doing 130kmh down the freeway. Inattention is taking your eyes off the road texting your mates in traffic.

That said some people should not be allowed to drive, they do not have the ability to multi task and are just an accident going some where to happen...
