Indonesians are generally an easy going people and prepared to be flexible in bending the rules to suit the situation rather than being blindly obedient to the letter of the law, even prison officers. As we saw here recently in the case of Milat, if anyone finds out small concessions are being made there is an outcry, over there most people see it as simple human decently that doesn't change the fact that the prisoner is still a prisoner.
