If we buy more than we sell, to take delivery of Chinese goods at ports in Australia we need to pay for those goods in either AUD, USD or whatever but most likely in USD as it is the worlds reserve currency.
At this point the trade is closed - they have our money we have their goods.
They are no longer a creditor to Australia.
Not sure how you consider them a 'creditor'
