Seems to me that AmusedObserver is throwing up a range of scenarios. Put enough balls in the air and one of them's a good chance to score a goal. If that's what he/she did last year then it would have been hard for people to listen in the heat of the moment as there's no lead on which ball to try and catch. I daresay shareholders went with the ones prepared to lead the way and history suggests they did the right thing at that time in response to that particular offer.
