This is a problem I had with several teachers at school. They liked to teach theory and rumour, but would not accept facts. There were quite a few occasions when I argued with teachers about alternate veiwpoints for what they were teaching but they usually refused to acknowledge my argument even if I produced evidence to prove the teacher wrong.
