Oil prices couldn’t hold onto earlier gains but still finished in the green as fires in Canada affected output.
US Nymex crude rose 1.2 per cent to $US44.32 a barrel, while global benchmarkBrent crude put on 0.9 per cent to $US45.01.
Energy stocks rallied 0.7 per cent.
In Europe, markets were slightly higher after a string of recent declines attracted bargain hunters. Energy shares also got a boost from rising oil prices.
