Large early education providers own the following number of centres in Canberra. Goodstart 7, G8 Education 11 and Affinity 3, whether they have vacancies or not will make little difference, because of the size of their holdings, but we may see a reduction in ownership if occupancy levels continue to decline. Many questions should be asked of local councils, who continually grant building permission for early childhood centres to be built in areas already saturated with centres. Within a five kilometres radius of where I live, there are twenty seven childcare centres and another three building applications awaiting approval from local council. Not one of the twenty seven centres has full occupancy levels.
This had me reflect on Chris Scott's release in February regarding the resignation of Christopher Sacre where he stated that Christopher Sacre would become the independent contractor of choice for G8 for the "development of premium new centres in strategic locations". Perhaps, and it would appear, that aggressive accumulation of centres has ceased and more strategic planning is taking place, with both new centres and the disposal of others.
