    adamleo,

Google "high frequency trading explained" and you will find all you need to know.
Basically it's legal theft from the small investor who doesn't have access to the high speed trading platform. The speed of the computer can see a buy or sell order before it is placed and so, those trading on the HFT platform can sell to your buy or buy your sell first, because they have the advantage of being milli-seconds in front of your order. The advantage is that by being able to see orders a split second before they hit the market, they essentially know what the market is going to do. Legal theft as I said.

They don't care what the price is and aren't really interested in the price going up enough to deliver a profit to investors. They make their money making a pip at a time on volume, whether the SP is going up or down. You might ask, why bother? But if the volume is high enough and you keep doing it, the profit soon adds up.

I certainly don't know everything about it, only that it is an unfair advantage over normal investors which ASIC and the ASX seem to condone. What can I say?
