It is also a norm for trees to have a biennial cropping behavior and be bigger harvest one year and smaller the next. So a spread of planting across the years helps smooth these production lumps. Some farms or sections of farms will have higher yields than others in any harvest because of that fact. There has been some work on varietal selection to minimise annual variability but as Surundy has said in the past there are many things at play.
