Men arrested over alleged plan to take boat to join IS remain in custody

Five men who allegedly planned to leave Australia by boat to join the so-called Islamic State in Syria will remain in custody for up to a week without charge after a brief court appearance.

Notorious Islamic preacher Musa Cerantonio as well as Shayden Thorne, the brother of another hardline Islamist, were among those arrested as they were towing a boat towards Cape York in far north Queensland.

Also in custody in Cairns is Kadir Kaya, who last year told a Melbourne radio station he wanted to leave Australia because he felt Muslims were not welcome, but could not because authorities had confiscated his passport.
