ARM Holdings PLC (NASDAQ: ARMH), based in Cambridge, England, has a different business model than most semiconductor companies. ARM designs and licenses intellectual property rather than manufacturing and selling actual semiconductor chips. Most major manufacturers use ARM technology in a wide variety of applications, ranging from mobile handsets and digital set-top boxes to car braking systems and network routers. ARM technology is in nearly every smartphone and digital camera, along with many other electronic devices. Partnering manufacturers pay ARM royalties for every chip they produce. As of 2015, ARM has sales of $1.3 billion, assets of $2.9 billion and a market capitalization of $22.6 billion.
