Periodic detention is a sentence of imprisonment which is served for a specified number of days in each week.1 In New South Wales, where an offender is sentenced to a term of imprisonment which exceeds three months but is less than three years, the sentencing court may order that sentence to be served by way of periodic detention, which generally requires the offender to remain in custody2 for two consecutive days of each week for the duration of the sentence.3 An offender serving periodic detention may also be required by the Commissioner for Corrective Services to carry out community work and attend training or counselling
