Renewables are reliant on coal for backup energy so they can't replace it. Just have a look at German coal use. There is too much focus in the media on energy use instead of energy production. After all energy production is what produces greenhouse gases. If no one is using the energy on a sunny day from coal fired power stations because of those wonderful solar panels, there is no reduction in greenhouse gases. It's all about the feel good illusion.
