The record day is when the registry closes there books, they take all the holders from the 30/05 which would have settled on the 05/06. The record date is also used for off market transfers ie. you transfer shares from your name into a custiodian(trustee) on the 04/06, after ex date, but before record date the dividend would be sent to the custodian
