"All those first preference votes go to the LNP."
    Oh derhh!
"The number of senators elected depends on how many quotas are filled."
    Oh derhh!
The party themselves decide who comes first, second and so on on their ticket."
    Oh derhh!

"It looks like your vote will be exhausted immediately."
Oh dear, you're so wrong with this statement Pugsley it hurts, and yet staggeringly, if you'd read your own post you'd know that yourself because your link actually provided the correct answer to my query!

    Transferring the surplus:
Any surplus votes from elected candidates (votes in excess of the quota they need), are transferred to the candidates who were the second choice of voters on those ballot papers. Because it is not possible to determine which votes actually elected the candidate and which votes are surplus, all the elected candidate's ballot papers are transferred at a reduced rate.

So my hasty, No. 1 in a box above the line, vote was not an exhausted vote in that imaginary example in any way shape or form.
Its only shortcoming is that it would've affected the transfer rate, at say Count 39, at which preferences of the now eliminated No.7 candidate on the LNP ticket, transfer or flow [at a slightly reduced average rate] to my imagined example candidate which was from memory the Family First No1 candidate.
