re: counter bid has to come Hi Hmph,
Haven't quite finished looking at the data, but will get something together tomorrow. Basically I am looking at all trades for 2006 (136237 in total) Of these there are about 30 trade sizes that have greater than 50 transactions and don't end in 00 or 000. For example:
1562 trades at 949
656 trades at 948
393 trades at 870
392 trades at 474
I just need to now have a look at:
[1] When these trades started
[2] What days had the highest distribution
[3] Check the trades were mostly sells for these days
I had already done some analysis previously and can assure everyone there is no doubt who ever was selling at 949, 948, 870, 474 etc were placing orders in such a way as to drive prices down. In fact if anyone cares to look at the course of trades for Friday you can see they were doing this even as the price was breaking out with 108 trades for 942 shares.
I also want to revisit the period just prior to the Merrill Lynch announcement because I remember a lot of small orders around there as well. Will keep you posted.
