MEDIA ADVISORY
Wake Radiology Oncology Featured on Discovery Channel Program
CARY (September 21, 2006) – Wake Radiology Oncology is featured in a “Pulse
on America” segment that will air Monday, September 25 at 6:30 a.m. on the
Discovery Channel. “The Best in Radiation Therapy” segment is part of the
Coping with Cancer Series.
Andrew Kennedy, MD and Scott Sailer, MD, co-medical directors of Wake
Radiology Oncology Services, are interviewed about their innovative radiation
therapy treatment of breast and liver cancers. The segment focuses on two
patients – Roberta Taylor of Cary who received directed internal radiation for
breast cancer treatment and Roman Jacobs of Raeford who underwent
microsphere therapy for liver cancer.
With MammoSite® Radiation Therapy (RTS), radiation is delivered through a
small catheter into the site where a breast tumor was removed. This advanced
technology, used following a lumpectomy, allows the radiation to be directed to
the specific location, sparing the surrounding tissue. In traditional external beam
radiation therapy, patients undergo 25 to 35 treatments for up to seven weeks.
With the introduction of MammoSite® RTS, patients receive two treatments a day
for five days.
Microsphere therapy, which was reintroduced in the United States by Dr.
Kennedy in 2000, places radiation-filled microscopic spheres into the liver,
destroying cancerous cells, while preserving adjacent healthy tissue.

Treatment is administered through a catheter placed inside the liver’s main blood
vessel. The radiated microspheres deliver a continuous radiation dosage for 14
days. Patients who have not had success with chemotherapy or are not able to
have surgery are candidates for the therapy.
“The Best in Radiation Therapy” segment can be seen locally in the Triangle on
Discovery Channel stations.
