Hi Pinto, before medicare you had to pay full fees up front.
In those days wages were peanuts and basically people of necessity avoided
going to doctors and tried to self deal with medical issues sometimes with dire
consequences. Medicare was one of the greatest govt initiatives ever but unless
its funded properly it can prove ineffective.
I had a friend who put off going to the doctor because of the cost
and he wound up with pneumonia and died at home of haemorrhage
at the age of about 21.
I am so glad about the scare campaign on medicare because as you can see
by the coalitions response it basically has locked them into the position
of never trying to undermine it again. They will now have to re-visit their health policy and do something tangible to prove their commitment to it.
