From what I know Erdogan's supporters knew it was coming (they alerted the partially allied Kurdistan Regional Government in advance), they allowed the coup to partially happen (to strengthen Erdogan's position) and there are suggestions of Gulf State support for the Kemalist plotters while the Saudis are claiming ignorance on the one hand and allegedly paying a reparation to Erdogan on the other. Erdogan's ongoing romance with the Muslim Brotherhood is one reason why the Saudis and the Gulf states may have supported the coup (unless this part is a pure Iranian lie). Are the Iranians telling the truth for once? They are supporting their assertions based on tweets from an well known Saudi (underground) blogger with a close connection to the House of Saud.

It's a bucket of eels that is seeing the Gulenists and secular Muslims oustered from any positions of responsibility within Turkey. This is a war within Islam with the Salafists coming out on top within Turkey for the moment.

Other features. The PKK and PYD now see Ankara as the ISIS capital rather than Mosul or Raqqa.
