I don't think there is anything fishy here. Mining explorers in some ways are not so different from early biotechs and tech start ups. They have a promising product/resource but need substantial capital to get it to the market often with little or no income. You have to tap the market for that capital and in the absence of significant income and solid financials (i.e. divs, P/E ratios) conferences represent one way for these companies to get their message out there to potential investors, and to differentiate from the competition.
