I find it kind of strange that Tesla / Panasonic went for these little traditional cell type batteries they then pack into a main battery pack, I see they can substitute dummies in there if required to balance out the pack weight etc.

I think they also did this for redundancy, flexibility, they can design the pack in different shapes if required, and even use the cells for purposes other than cars.
