That is a problem with any diet recommendation:
The commercial food chain has to a large extent been corrupted and of course corrupted very unevenly so that a diet recommendation in one area where a particular food/water/sources are available does not necessarily apply in a different area...
And of course that these one-size fits all diet recommendations are probably never going to work across the board...
Given all that, since the so-called Mediterranean diet generally follows the popular paleo diet guidelines for the most part, it is probably a step in the right direction...
It does seem good health over a long life is probably more about not systematically making very poor decisions about diet/activity/behavior/medications/etc., rather than making consistently optimal decisions...
