'freefom of speech' has never been about protecting individuals so they can defame others on race or another basis. Freedom of speech is clearly alive and well (we're able to freely discuss issues such as this one without being arrested) despite 18c existing. All 18c does is stop people defaming individuals or groups (or more specifically offending them using untrue statements) on the basis of race.
