In Australia I think it's true that a woman will only have as many children as she desires or is capable of having whether that is limited by age, finance, or health etc. I think that would be equally true if polygyny was permitted, which is what the point was.
I don't think an increase in polygyny would lead to an increase in mouths to feed.
Whether the population of women we are talking about have the ability to control the number of children they have or not is irrelevant in the context being discussed.
The number of women is still the same whether we choose monogamy or polygyny. Whether they are inseminated 1:1 or 1:4 or 1:x>1 it matters not.
I get the point though and yes it's sad women have limited control of their fertility in some cultures and that says more about the culture than it does about the comparitive fertility rates in monogamy vs polygyny.
I think the horse was flatlining two posts ago but I'll hand back the whip to whoever wants to continue flogging.

Let's say 4 "wives" of one muslim man have a total of 20 children (5 each). And 1 wife of an non mulsim man has 2 children. Or 4 wives of 4 non muslim men have 8 children.
I can see a difference in the reproductive pattern, particularly as has been found in the UK, the "4 wives" are closely related to the muslim man.
I will leave it there.
