Sweden's SSAB (a highly-specialized global steel company) has just announced its new project to manufacture steel with zero CO2 emissions. Worried?

Instead of a blast furnace; the plan is to use hydrogen, water and hydro/wind electricity.
Their partner is Sweden's LKAB (a high-tech international minerals group, world leading producer of processed iron ore products for steelmaking)

Unlike Matmor, which can use NMDC's  iron ore tailings and general scrap, SSAB will have to use iron ore pellets: mined, refined and manufactured by LKAB.

There is no mention of any cost-reduction in the process, merely emissions.

The Energy Use in the Steel Industry report highlights that there is no single solution for steel plants to decrease their energy intensity and identifies the main factors that affect the energy intensity. It also points out that the main opportunities for energy savings in the future will come from the optimal selection of production processes and raw materials, increased use of economically available scrap, transfer of best practices, waste heat recovery...
