Why are you confused? This is both a preventive vaccine (which protects against infection as gardisil does for the HPV virus, a precursor to cervical cancer) AND a therapeutic remedy (which generates T-cell activity to seek out and destroy the virus).

Existing therapies treat effects but cannot act as a cure. The virus hides in the spinal column where the immune system is not good at seek and destroy missions; generating an extremely effective T-cell response (which is a turbocharged immune system response and that interaction is subject of a separate patent held by Prof Frazer and is used in combination with the herpes vaccine now being tested) is the key.

As Prof Frazer indicates, both herpes simplex (cold sore virus) and genital herpes are related and there will be protection for each from the immune response. So you have two mechanisms involved in the immune response: protection and cure.

At the background of all this isn't just the effect on the quality of life of infected individuals, but the link between herpes infection and Alzheimer's disease. Given the high rates of infection, 1 in 8 in Australia, but higher in the UK and the US, the market for this is colossal.
