Alternatively, he could have elected to give a wishy-washing answer implying that he might be buying them
As you say, he obviously wasn't concerned about the appropriateness of answering one way or the other, for if he had been he would have refused to answer the question
And so the question was a good one. It tossed a crumb of information at the feet of starving shareholders.
