The Australian Newspaper: Lithium oversupply fears grow as Chinese plan $300m plant, page-56

I'd say it's fairly obviously both. The Australian is Rupert's pet passion project and there really isn't much for him to gain from spending money to report the truth. It exists to allow him power and influence over public debate in Australia and to provide a platform for the opinion of conservatives and special interests. The commercial news business ceased being purely about informing the public a long time ago. It's now a fight over clicks and attention.

On the other hand, no one should be making investment decisions based solely on what they read in The Australian or any newspaper for that matter.

Macquarie have basically just taken a great opportunity to fill the knowledge vacuum with FUD. I don't think it's an accident that this FUD has found it way all over the Internet instead of the many other voices presenting with far more evidence of a shortage than not.

Big business has never been a fan of large-scale change or the EV and in many ways, Australia is on the front line of the battle...

It wouldn't surprise me one bit (probably the case) if Macquarie, News Corp and the fossil fuel lobby (and possibly other large resource-related interests) were coordinating the spread of this FUD for the various benefits of each. (I note in the article they seem to play up the prospects of a benefit for the beleaguered government in W.A. ! Hmm, I wonder if there's an election coming? ...)

It won't matter at the end of the day. The only difference it will make is to keep the SP of some of affected stocks depressed for a bit longer than they otherwise would have been. It might be weeks or it might be months but this time the change cannot be stopped.

Fossil fuel's time in the sun is quickly coming to an end (once again)...
