MJM23, the answer is YES they did missed it. Believe it or not, the answers are staring at us all along. Found on the September 2016 presentation page 12-14. Look at the Vintage 2D scan in 1980 vs the recent 2D scan 2016. You see those obscured noise on the Vintage image? can you see anything through those noise? that's the reason why the big boys missed it.

Without the sharp eyes and deep experience of someone like PB, it would probably be quite impossible to see and know what you're looking at. I agree with how Ace describe PB.
