What do ASX50 companies represent? Stability, yield, some growth?
For an investment in ASX 50 companies, my advice would be to gain exposure via a low cost ETF. Unless of course you had strong conviction in specific companies. History tells us it is a pretty efficient end of the market, lots of analyst coverage, so generally not much overall value added by brokers or active fund managers through stock selection. There are some exceptions however.
One school of thought is to have a core and satellite approach, with the core part of your portfolio invested passively in low cost ETFs giving you the desired exposures. And then your satellite components are assigned to companies (e.g. that fall outside ASX100) or active fund managers to add a bit of spice to your portfolio.
