HFT can only have (as I see it) three reasons for their activity
1/ Pump and dump
2/ Acquire a substantial number of shares at a low price in a company they believe will prosper and give them a high return
3/ A competitor who want to send them broke to buy their patents and procedures
The first one you have to be careful of if you buy at the top of the pump
The second one is to the benefit of all who own shares with the only question of, at what price is the bottom to buy more
The third one is unlikely and out of our control anyway
But when I see the amount of work that people do with charts and research IMHO they also need to do the same with HFT for patterns and signals
IMHO you do your research and you make a decision to buy, after that you pray that all goes well and don't overthink your original decision
I have friend who started a business and obtained USA defense contracts, and 6 years later they are still flat out trying to get to the stage where it all comes together.
The moral is --- Business does not move at the speed of light, it takes time to get it all together to the point where you can just sit back and let the dollars roll in
