I am no construction expert, so correct me if I am wrong. Like you mentioned, brick veneer construction are popular with mostly volume builders as there are cost and time efficiencies over solid brick construction but also easily allows for installations of services and insulation batt within the timber/steel frame. They can work around the difficulties of insulting solid brick by going with double brick construction. Double brick creates a cavity between two layers for insulation. See example below...
