Gas saves the day for Santos in SA.

Oil and gas group Santos has been unaffected by the blackout because its Moomba gas plant, about 770km north of Adelaide, isn't connected to the broader electricity grid and is self-sufficient. The Santos Moomba plant supplies gas to Sydney via a 1160km pipeline, and gas to Adelaide through a 790km pipeline.

BHP Billiton's giant Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine, OZ Minerals' Prominent Hill copper and gold mine, and the Whyalla steelworks could be without full power for up to 10 more days as the vast economic cost of the collapsed South Australian electricity system hits major industries.

Arrium's Whyalla steelworks is also facing mounting costs from the power outage, which KordaMentha administrator Mark Mentha has calculated at $4 million a day for the steelworks and an associated iron ore mining operation. Those extra imposts are undermining attempts to find a new buyer for Arrium's loss-making Whyalla steelworks.

I hope some meaningful reforms and decisions come out of the terrible energy supply events in S.A.
