Hi, its a difficult question that I dont know the answer to, my understanding is that indeed its a widespread belief in the lithium market that it is technically easier to achieve higher purity levels of lithium carbonate (or hydroxide) starting with spodumene ore rather than starting with brine, due to 1/ more complex intertwined impurities that you may find within liquid brines compared to solid spodumene rocks, 2/ it is easier to sparate impurities from rocks rather than from brines.

For example in wikipedia (but they dont provide any source) :
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spodumene

"Another key advantage that spodumene has over its more popular brine rivals is the purity of the lithium carbonate it can produce. While all product used by the battery industry has to be at least 99.5% lithium carbonate, the makeup of the remaining 0.5% is important; higher amounts of iron, magnesium or other deleterious materials make for a less attractive product."

    Or from this website :
    http://geology.com/minerals/spodumene.shtml

"Spodumene once served as the most important ore of lithium metal. Although it remains an important source of lithium, today most of the world's lithium is produced from subsurface brines in Chile, Argentina, and China. These sources of lithium have lower production costs and are suitable for most uses. However, when lithium of highest purity is needed, spodumene is the source that is used."

However, it is indeed a myth that you cannot achieve the highest purity levels with brine sources of lithium (the 99.95%+ stuff) vs spodumene, IMO its just a question of costs of purification.

If anyone has reliable sources to share on this subject, its much appreciated !
