AWS sell Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
NXT sell rackspace, guaranteed power and aircon.
If only AWS needed another AZ in Sydney or a Melbourne region, NXT could well have sold them floor/rackspace and everyone would be happy. -
NXT are well aware of AWS, AWS have edge location in Melbourne and NXT offer direct connect - https://www.nextdc.com/services/cloud-connectivity/aws
They have lots of synergies. Although there is absolutely a risk. The more companies that move away from buying, maintaining, securing, paying maintenance, replacing, patching etc their infrastructure (and host it in NXT) and choose AWS to run there workloads and let AWS handle everything I mentioned regarding infrastructure could potentially hurt NXT or any data centre for that matter.
Totally agree with @Inductor comments around quality. NXT was the first stock I ever purchased, walked in there a customer when we migrated all our gear there a few years ago in a previous company and walked out a shareholder. If you hold NXT I could not recommend booking a tour more, it's fascinating and you will get to see where your investment is going and the quality we are talking about.
For some more context, my current company migrated everything from Data Centre to AWS. 100%, all in!
Name a startup that isn't AWS, Azure, Goolgle Cloud or SoftLayer? Very few I imagine. A sign of the times. The discussion around data sovereignty and privacy is a good one, but you CAN achieve this on AWS, a good example - https://aws.amazon.com/govcloud-us/
If you are interested in more of this, I suggest reading up on AWS Lambda - https://aws.amazon.com/lambda/details/
(The risk with Lambda, is that you are then locked into AWS)
and
Serverless - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serverless_computing
This is why the VMWare deal is such a big deal. It's now easier than ever to take your VMWare environment hosted in a datacentre and move it "straight to AWS".
