It is obviously not their intention (I hope) to drill out 1000' of steel.
If the drill string snapped rather than a joint broken under control, then they may have to mill until they have a suitable section of the drill pipe to tap a thread onto. It could be a bit mangled. If so, once they get the first stand out, it should be straight forward.
They really should tell us a bit more about their predicament.
They did however indicate that the operation was standard and straightforward.
