One thing I do know from many, many years experiece dealing with trauma victims - often their recollections are distorted, imagined, are an amalgam of what they remember, what they think they remember and what they've been told
Often there are gaps and in a bid to gain continuity, the gaps are filled with what is thought to be fact.
I'm not saying one way or the other but the survivors testimony is far from incontrovertible fact
