How to short 101:

1. Pick the industry that is in the downturn then choose the worst performers etc high debt, low cash reserve, low quality products, high cost ....

2. Pick an overvalued industry and choose the most hyped up stocks. (Make you you understand the fundamentals or you can get burned with short squeeze).

Let put those into PLS perspective:

For option 1: PLS has no debt, 100M in cash, high quality product with huge reserve. Once in production will be on the lowest cost curve end. Upcoming BOAs provide upfront payment so no cash flow issue. Is Lithium in the downturn ? Well it is just starting.

For option 2: Is Lithium industry overhyped and PLS is overvalued ? Well yes it was few months back but as @binwood mentioned: solid DFS and business case, legal issue resolved, ROFR relinquished, progressing to mining. The current SP is absolute just or slightly on the undervalue side giving more BOAs on the way and spod price rising (GXY rumoured to get 800 dollars / ton contract). The project is has been de-risked massively from the financial point of view. On the technical side, MIN with loads of experience building mines + Ken and team combined experience in bring more than 10 mines further more de-risk the project.

Someone here mentioned the intention to short to 43cents and could not justify why 43 is the number. The only reason I can think of is applying 9% dilution to .48 cents to be issued to MIN roughly gives you 43 cents. Well good luck to you with such a simple calculation. Your mate could possibly get more educations on the trading if he talks to me.
