That is correct. The supergene is often the easiest and most profitable part of any deposit and is normally mined by open pit methods. For argument sake take Sandfire Resources for example, which mines a copper gold deposit in WA. The enriched copper ores in their supergene zones where so rich that some were mined and sold as direct shipping ore with no need at all for any serious form of processing. This situation however will never occur when gold is the primary mineral in the deposit because it doesn't exist in high enough concentrations in the first place.
