If you are right then life has very little, if any value at all.
This statement has always left me perplexed. On the surface is seems that those who propose that life can only be meaningful if there is some sort of continuation of life after death have a point. But I have always thought that this logic is flawed.
Let me try to explain what I think using an analogy. I go on holiday to a destination of my dreams - I know that the duration will be short. What attitude should I take?:
Not too many people will have difficulty in making a choice here.
- Enjoy the moments of the holiday and regard the experiences as meaningful.
- Realize that the holiday will come to an end and so regard temporary experiences as meaningless.
So my proposal is that irrespective of a belief in life after death our attitude should be to value the experiences of this life. What we do in this life should not be dependent on a belief in what happens after we die. After all, right now, it is only a belief.
