Yeah, read everything I could get my hands on, including patents that I could access.
I consider myself reasonably knowledgeable in audio electronics and electro-acoustics, so I have a good grasp of what they're trying to do and still a little bit skeptical. There are a lot of factors which influence how sound behaves, and the reason we use single diaphragm to push air, smaller area for higher frequencies, bigger area for lower frequencies as the sheer volume of air at which it needs to be pushed in order to achieve sufficient SPL, and then the limitations of small drivers to push lots of air obviously perform in the higher frequency ranges.
I do hope this technology revolutionises the way sound is produced, I really really do.
Putting aside that individually the pixels can perform single frequencies at reasonable output levels, the interaction between each pixel will come into play when reconstructing more complex sounds. I believe this is where they are currently struggling and AKP are probably buying time at the front-end (i.e. saying that they are integrating currently) when in reality I think the integration has already happened and they are now trying to make the device work with complex sounds.
From some of their announcements it seems they have done as much of the science work as possible, and they are now just meandering their way through using potentially a brute-force approach trying to make software adjustments to see which arrangement yields the best outcome. That is to say that they are probably playing with delay timing between individual pixels across the face of the wafer and determining the impact of super-positioning as multiple frequencies are emanating from different pixels in close proximity, possibly resulting in a sound that is vastly different than anticipated (i.e. emergence).
Emergence is a common side-effect in product development. The end result may be that the waver is not workable for complex sounds. We could end up with a very expensive piezo.
