in my view Telstra are the provider to be with if you want superior coverage.

the rest are a joke and im speaking from my own personal experience.

I was previously with vodofone, I had just signed a 24 month contract, like many people I got lured by their competitive prices.
2 months into the contract I had an absolute gut full. I live in probably the biggest and most populated suburb of Perth and I couldn't even make or receive phone calls let alone get any data service, even when I moved to other areas my coverage was very bad.

I phoned them with my issues and they were dismissive, I mentioned if it was not investigated I was lodging with the ombudsman, ironically the article you provided talks of increase in complaints to telco ombudsman about vodofone. Anyway after my threat they had a technician roll up to my house the next day with some sort of device, he performed some tests and he reluctantly confirmed my concerns, but would not elaborate or disclose any reasons for the pathetic coverage. Long story short within the next week I was sent a prepaid parcel post and given instructions to post the phone back to Vodafone and that I would be relinquished from the 24 month contract at no expense to me.

so in my experience having used all telco providers im very confident in the product Telstra provide in comparison to its competitors.

In addition the article talks of other providers like boost, well boost are another very efficient and very cost effective service provider that are ridiculously cheap, I actually use them on a second phone that I own and their coverage is brilliant because they work off the Telstra network. So Telstra is also competing at very great prices vicariously through other entities.
