But let's try and look at it your way and panel beat the definition so it agrees with your (incorrect) understanding of the word. So you reckon that investing in a stock at the bottom of a cycle, which is the same as trying to pick the bottom, is contrarian? Only the entire western world tries to pick the bottom when it comes to investing. Hardly against popular opinion mate.
