A senior Australia Post manager is on suicide watch stemming from alleged bullying and harassment by union boss Jim Metcher in a dispute over a workers' compensation case that has rocked the postal business at the highest levels.
The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union NSW secretary, who temporarily stepped down last week over revelations of his domestic violence history, is accused of making aggressive and demeaning phone calls to one of Post's regional heads of compensation from February to June this year, allegedly referring to her as a "useless f---ing c--t".
An investigation co-authored by former Australian Council of Trade Unions assistant secretary Tim Lyons said Mr Metcher's conduct was "inappropriate" and had resulted in "significant negative personal impacts" to Australia Post staff.
Mr Metcher's alleged abuse concerned a postal worker's disputed claim for compensation over "tennis elbow" – a claim that had top Australia Post executives intervening, the national head of compensation leaving and senior managers placed on sick leave.

The regional manager, who has worked in workers' compensation for 16 years, is now herself on workers' compensation for severe anxiety and depression as a result of the alleged abuse.

Mr Metcher is accused of calling her at all hours of the day and evenings about the claim, including on public holidays, and leaving a hostile message on her phone calling her a "useless, f---ing c---t".
He allegedly emailed her daily for several months, with urgent demands over allegedly minor matters and while copying in chief executive Ahmed Fahour. In the emails, he allegedly threatened to "get to her" and tell Mr Fahour.
'Absolutely helpless'

A consultant psychiatrist assessing the manager's claim concluded she felt "absolutely helpless" because she felt bullied by a man who led the union and had access to the head of Australia Post.

Documents attached to her workers' compensation claim said that after watching an ABC report in June on claims of bullying within the union, the manager "immediately felt physically sick and vomiting, ended up leaving work after their meeting". "She is home alone now, can't stop shaking and crying."
An Australia Post source said the woman was now on high medication and considered a suicide risk.
An investigation into Australia Post's handling of the postal workers' claim and Mr Metcher's behaviour revealed "several senior managers have noted this is the most stressful issue they have dealt with in their careers".
The review, by Australia Post's chief risk officer, an internal audit officer and former Australian Council of Trade Unions assistant secretary Tim Lyons, concluded that while Mr Metcher's frustration was "understandable" the way he expressed it was "inappropriate and not conducive to resolution".

"The volume, tone, timing and escalation of communications, along with demands for sometimes unreasonable timeframes for responses and regular threats of external action has hindered the ability for the claim to be effectively managed," the report said.
"Unfortunately this has also resulted in significant negative personal impacts to some Australia Post staff."
The report, dated April 20, said that the dispute had seen 200 emails sent in a two-month period over the one claim.
The details of the alleged abuse come as company insiders have told The Australian Financial Review that Mr Metcher intimidated five women who worked in human resources functions earlier this year.

Australia Post has now set down rules determining how Mr Metcher can communicate, verbally and in person, with its employees.
Mr Metcher's union is investigating him over reports that he punched his wife and daughter in the face repeatedly in August 2007 and had a 27-year-long "domestic violence lifestyle" with his wife. He also allegedly headbutted a union colleague in 2013 during pay negotiations at Australia Post.
Mr Metcher's family have claimed that he is a reformed man and has rebuilt his relationship with them. Last week, Mr Metcher said he had never been convicted of an offence that would make him unfit to be a union secretary.

It appears Metcher is so bad that even the union and the ex-union hacks (Labor) are publicaly distancing themselves from the thug!

Even they have standards (albeit relatively low)!
