As the mid tier players become cheaper and cheaper and do nothing to protect the slide in their share prices there will be plenty of bargains available to be taken over for less than peanuts.

The long term shareholders who thought they were investing in a good company with a good future will lose out. Some will even find the takeover price doesn't match their purchase price.

The winners will be all those investors who purchase shares just before the takeover is announced, and will probably be very happy with a quick 20%, 30% or even 40% on their purchase price, though that will no doubt be well below the real worth of the assets they are selling.
