Footy, you must explain how you see a republic functioning, ie the role of the President vs Parliament, does paliament still have a governing party and PM ,or move to the US system of President being the all poweful position and then a house of Reps (Congress) and Senate,
Many Americans have said to me that we are fortunate to have our system where the party elected to govern can (ususally) do that as opposed to the US system of gridlock and a posssible situation where the President is sometimes opposed in his legislation by his own party.
The 1999 push for a republic was split between two opposing systems of electing the president, I beleive most people said leave well enough alone then.
