I'm for a republic, but when my American colleagues give me a hard time about having an overseas queen, princes and princesses and a "Governor General" (which for some reason they find hilarious and like something out of Pirates of the Caribbean), I do have an explanation.
I explain that our Head of State lives on the other side of the world, rarely visits, doesn't interfere and seems more interested in her Corgis. And that's why we have had one of the longest continuous democracies in the world - inertia and disinterest at the highest level.
