A Republic........Why not?, page-93

For the record I supported a Republic in 1999...... well, at least until the Yes side split.

It's not correct for Justis to say Howard rigged the referendum. He outsmarted Turnbull and made a perfectly valid point about voting without having a defined model.

The public seem to want a directly elected President. That's because most people haven't thought through the implications, which would radically change our bicameral system. I believe a Directly elected President will never get the required majority in a referendum? Why? Because it's such an easy target for the No case to drive trucks through. I would never vote for such a model. Only a minimalist model has a chance.
